El mercado español de los libros electrónicos tuvo un comienzo lento, ya que los consumidores se quejaban del escaso catálogo disponible, de la complejidad de la compra de libros electrónicos y del impuesto más elevado que se aplica a las ediciones impresas: un 18% frente a un 4%. Sin embargo, el panorama ha cambiado radicalmente en cuestión de semanas, tras una andanada de lanzamientos de lectores electrónicos en el último mes. Para muchos, la mayor noticia fue que Amazon.es abrió el viernes su librería Kindle, con 22.000 títulos en español, además de libros en catalán, gallego y euskera. Sin embargo, la pregunta sigue siendo si los compradores de libros electrónicos españoles acudirán a las tiendas de las multinacionales extranjeras o gravitarán hacia las ofertas autóctonas. Después de todo, en el último mes, varias de las principales librerías del país también han entrado en el juego.
La Casa del Libro es actualmente el líder del mercado de libros electrónicos en España, con una previsión de ventas de 40.000 títulos este año, pero que todavía sólo representan el 1% de sus ventas totales, y un tercio del total de 120.000 libros electrónicos vendidos por todos los libreros. Las ventas de libros electrónicos sólo representaron el 0,3% del total de ventas de libros en España en 2010, frente al 20% en Estados Unidos, según GSK Consulting.
